Records, 1766-1874.

This collection contains an account of "remarkable and sudden deaths" in Northborough from 1766 to 1808, a court warrant against constable Samuel Goddard ( - ) for failure to produce taxes, a notice of the Social Library's annual meeting, an itemized bill for building schoolhouse no. 5 with the school committee's response and receipts, and a notification for building a church. Includes also are five booklets of the Evangelical Congregational Society's Sabbath School from 1833 to 1840 kept by the school's superintendent Nahum Fay (1756-1841). The booklets contain a list of the teachers, student attendance, and the teachers' detailed assessments of their classes. Of special note is a letterbook for 1815 to 1816 of the business correspondence of the Northborough Manufacturing Company, founded in 1814 for the machine-manufacture of cotton and woolen cloth and yarn. The letters were written by sole agent David Atherton ( - ) and concern the buying and selling of goods, shipping to other cities, joining a manufacturing society, "hard times" in 1816, and a brief history of the company, including its owners and the number and type of employees. There are also photostatic copies of two record volumes of the Church of Christ, for the period 1780 to 1874, kept by various church members, including Thaddeus Fay (1731-1822). The books contain miscellaneous votes and church transactions, 1780 to 1845; records of persons admitted to the church, 1780 to 1856; and records of baptisms, 1780 to 1870, marriages, 1815 to 1874, and town deaths, 1816 to 1869. The latter include the age of the deceased and the cause of death. There is also a list of resident church members, 1858, and a history of the church from its incorporation in 1746.
